6th grade in the art room this year...
Pop art symbol:  After learning about pop artist Romero Britto, students had to illustrate a symbol in oil pastels usig similar elements as Britto.  Bright colors, easitly recognizable symbols, thick, black outlines, and patterns were emphasized.
Color wheels:  We spent a lot of time studying the color wheel this year.  Students were only given primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) along with some black and white paint.  After sketching out a motif of their choice, students had to mix colors to create the secondary colors, as well as tints (colors plus white) and shades (colors plus black) of each color to neatly paint in their color wheels.
Graffiti:  Students viewed a video on how to create stylized lettering to create a positive message, graffiti inspired!
Famous painting re-created:  After choosing a famous painting from history to critique, students to had re-create the painting as best as they could using whatever art supplies they had at home.
