1st Grade Art Show

1st grade accomplished quite a bit in art this year!
Crazy hair portrait: After discussing different kinds of lines, students had to create a portrait of themselves with "crazy hair" made up of zig zag, wavy, curly lines etc.  We went over general placement of facial features, as well as outlining and coloring techniques.
Pop art pumpkins:  Students learned about the art work of pop artist Andy Warhol.  We then created our own fall themed pop art of pumpkins, making sure to include the common elements we see in pop art which include bright colors and repetition. 
Christmas ornaments: After looking at the color wheel and learning the difference between primary and secondary colors, students had to do their own color mixing.  After painting in 6 circles to represent the 6 colors on the color wheel, we turned the circles into Christmas ornaments hanging on a Christmas tree branch.
Dream quilts:  Reading "Tar Beach" by African American artist Faith Ringgold was a highlight this year!  Faith is known for painting on quilts, with Tar Beach being her most famous work. Tar Beach is a story of a little girl who soars over New York City and dreams of owning everything she sees.  Students had to create a drawing of a dream they have, and glued pieces of fabric to create a "quilt frame".  
Found objects portrait:  Students learned about an Italian painter named Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who created portriats from various objects.  After looking at some examples of his work along with other famous portraits painted in history, students had to arrange found objects from around the house or outside to create a portrait of their own.
Fingerprint art:  Students looked at examples of art from well known children's author/illustrator Ed Emberley.  They then had to create their own version of the fingerprint art, using a marker to create a finger print, and adding details in black ink.
