In 4th grade art class this year...
Abstract name art: After learning the difference between abstract and realistic art, students created a piece of abstract art using the letters of their name.  Looks closely, you might be able to read their names.  These were crayon/watercolor resists.
Positive/Negative creatures:  After learning about positive and negative space in an artwork, students had to glue a positive shape next to the corresponding negative shape created and add ghoulish details.
Notan: In relation to the pos/neg creatures, students attemped Notan.  Notan is a form of Japanese art meaning "balance between black and white."  These were tricky, but fun to try.
Stamped snowflake:  Students used cardboard and white paint to stamp out a snowflake design, which shows radial balance.
Famous painting re-created:  After choosing a famous painting from history to critique, students to had re-create the painting as best as they could using whatever art supplies they had at home.
