Lines are the basic building blocks of drawing. Understanding different types of lines (straight, curved, dotted, thick, thin) helps children develop their ability to create shapes, patterns, and more complex images. The students used lines to draw a self-portrait with some crazy and silly hair. Emphasis was put on using different types of lines to create silly hair. We also discussed painting "next to" another color, rather than "on top of" another color. I try to encourage this type of painting so that the watercolors remain clean and bright, rather than dirty and dull. Mixing watercolors will come later in the year and the students will have other opportunities to experiment when they start creating their own projects.
