Students were introduced to complementary colors for this project. Typically, a pair of complementary colors comprises one warm color and one cool color. The primary complementary color pairs are red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple. These combinations bring out the best in each other by making their complement more vibrant and noticeable.
The students used pencil to draw a monster. The only direction the students HAD to follow was to use a "rainbow line" from one side of the paper to the other side to start their monster. With the idea that the monster looks like it is peeking out of the paper. All facial features and hair were student choice. Next, the students traced over their pencil lines with black Sharpie marker and erased left over pencil lines. Finally, the students focused on painting their monster using their choice of complimentary colors.
I think the students did an amazing job creating their own monster. Many chose to use some of the facial characteristics I used for the demonstration, but as the year progresses, the students will begin to feel more comfortable about breaking away from the safety of my demonstration examples.
However, I think overall they all look quite unique and the students did a great job drawing!
