3rd Grade Mexican Mirrors

3rd grade students learned the heritage of Mexican Mirrors and noticed the engravings on the tin frames of the mirrors.  Students learned about the principle of design, balance and the three types of balance; symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance.  They created a radial balance design using the elements of art line and shape inspired by the example engraved designs on the Mexican Mirrors. They engraved a radial design on a piece of tin to add to the center of their artwork to create a metal tooling similar to the authentic Mexican Mirrors. Students added color to their designs with construction paper crayons for a brightly colored finished design.
