5th graders began this unit with identifying abstract art, and understanding that not all painting needs to be done with a brush! Utilizing a bulb syringe students expressed themselves much like Jackson Pollock, squirting, dripping and creating the background piece for their watercolor project. Once they had their backgrounds created students then explored 9 different watercolor techniques to which they were asked to use each one at least once on their project. The watercolor techniques included: gradation wash, wet on wet, sgraffito, salt, lifting off/blotting, color gradation, dry brush, oil resist and controlled spattering.
