Skull Project - McGilvray

Utilizing the Skull handout as a draft and a graphite pencil, design a pattern that utilizes shapes and objects that appeal to you. The pattern will be inspired by traditional sugar skull art utilized during dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. Once you have completed the draft and it is approved, you will be given a piece of colored paper for you to draw the skull and pattern on to. You may free draw the skull or utilize one of the tracing/transfer techniques we demoed in class. Once this part is complete, use the Prismacolors to add color, highlights and shadow to add depth to the image, Sugar Skulls What does the sugar skull symbolize? Sugar skulls represented a departed soul, had the name written on the forehead and was placed on the home ofrenda or gravestone to honor the return of a particular spirit. Sugar skull art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments.
