Tiki Batik 3rd Grade

Students learned about Hawaiian Tikis and symbolization of the facial features. Students created their own Tiki design with symbolic facial featrues. The Tikis were drawn on brown paper and construction paper crayons were used to add color.  The paper was crumpled to create cracks in the wax crayon coloring and to make it feel like fabric. Batik is a fabric dying technique where a wax design is applied to fabric and then dipped in dye.  The dye sticks to the fabric and not the wax, leaving a design.  The Tikis were dipped in black dye and created a design in the cracks of the crayon wax.  The results were amazing!
