Self Portraits Inspired by Kehinde Wiley

Students in grades 4 and 5 created self-portraits inspired by Kehinde Wiley.  Kehinde Wiley is best known for his large scale painted portraits   They include people from various backgrounds with contrasting decorative backgrounds.    One of his most famous pieces is the one he painted of Barack Obama.  He is an artist that believes in changing the narrative and helping others to believe that they matter as much as the people who traditionally have been represented in large scale portraits historically.  Students used his art work as inspiration to create self portraits that help them express themselves as subjects of great importance.
