1st through 4th grade students learned about Art and culture from Japan. We dicussed the geography of the archipelago in the Pacific Ociean, Japanese history, traditions, and modern culture. 3rd grade focused on the work of Katsushika Hokusai an Edo period artist famouse for his print "The Great Wave off of Kanangawa." 4ht grade students did a comparative study of landscape paintings in Japan. They used the work of Ando Hiroshige an Edo period painter and printmaker who had a modern and surprising take on traditional landscape painting. Kokeshi Dolls are a popular collectable from Japan. The 2nd grade created their own, many of which are self portraits. Finally, 1st grade enjoyed reading "Sumo Kitty" and creating a printed painting of a cat regailed in Sumo Mawashi and collaged on a background using an iconic Japanese raidial line design. Every student worked very hard and honored the Japanese artist with their best interpretation of the artwork that we studied.
