Dali Surreal Elephant

Students viewed the life and artwork of Spanish artist, Salvador Dali. Dali was known for his surrealist style of art depicting strange, dreamlike paintings. He is best known for his paintings of clocks that appear to be melting in his painting, Persistence of Memory, his surreal depiction of The Last Supper, and his tall skinny, legged Elephants painting. Students used Dali's The Elephants painting as inspiration for their picture. They used a guide to help them draw a picture of an elephant with unusually thin legs. We talked about making the elephant looks surreal with a hat and floating object above its back, similar to Dali's original painting. We also defined background and discussed how to draw an environment behind the elephant to give the picture depth. Students used a combination of sharpie marker, watercolor pencil, and chalk pastel to give color to their paintings.
