Third grade Romare Bearden Collage

Students were introduced to African American artist Romare Bearden. This artist used collage and paint in most of his art.He grew up in the Carolinas, he later moved to New York City. His life inspired his art depicting images of the Civil Rights movement as well as the Harlem Renaissance. I had the students focus on the musical aspect along with collage. Newspaper and music sheets were torn and glued as a base. To add color we printed with marker. Then students created a print of their favorite instrument which was transferred to black paper creating a silhouette, outlined in gold marker.
