Students created artwork which supports the theme of "Environmental Justice". Students were given background information about Hinkley, California and the subsequent contamination of groundwater by PG&E by viewing and discussing the movie Erin Brockovich. Then students viewed and discussed the documentary Atomic Homefront and made connections with an ongoing environmental disaster which is less than 60 miles from Sullivan. The lesson then focused on the fact that Sullivan, Missouri (Village of Oak Grove, MIssouri) is a Superfund site. Students even learned of a classmate whose home sits adjacent to Winsel Creek and how her family had to get special education and permission before building their home.  With each contaminate discussed, groups of studnets worked to identify the short and long term effects of exposure. Other topics that were lightly addressed were Times Beach, MO and Love Canal: Niagragra Falls, NY.
