Spring at BiltmoreThis fourth grade project was split into several weeks of lessons. Week 1, students found shapes in the architecture of Richard Morris Hunt and added the shapes to sketches as they observed and drafted the house. Week 2, students learned about hatching and cross-hatching, and they began to trace and shade their work. Week 3, students learned about perspective. They added mountains behind the house and one-point perspective lines and an elliptical fountain in front of the house to create depth. The final week (or 2 weeks in some cases) students added flowers around the perimeter of their paper. They were challenged to make the flowers realistic by using organic shapes rather than geometric shapes and by overlapping shapes as they drew the flower petals and leaves. I had them add hints of color using a paintbrush and chalk pastels. This way, the color adds to their detailed drawings rather than covering or overpowering them. We talked a lot about persistence and treating our art with care over several weeks. I was proud of their work. This was challenging for fourth graders!
