This year we explored art around the world. After being cooped up from the pandemic, I thought some travel would be engaging. In addition, exploring diverse cultures and arts helps us understand our global world and where some American traditions originate from.
- We started the year with the warm colors and lots of contrast that filled the Central America and Mexico Unit. Students went on an art adventure through Mexico as they created patterned blankets, textured tacos and Day of the Dead altars and sugar skulls. More adventures awaited as they continued south to Central America, making stops throughout the Caribbean along the way, when they learned about and made molas from Panama, carnival headpieces from Trinidad, oxcart wheels from Costa Rica, folk art from El Salvador and more! Rich travel experiences abounded in the Central America and Mexico Unit.
- The lessons in the South American inspired Unit are bursting with color and texture! Students explored the rainforest with lessons featuring sleepy sloths, moonlit macaws, stilt houses along the Amazon and tropical toucans. Patterned and woven textiles are a South American tradition that is threaded throughout the unit as well. And, of course, this unit would not have been complete without a few four-legged friends: burros, llamas and alpacas. I had so much fun introducing the students to the wonders of South America.
- We explored the special similarities and unique differences between Canada and the United States with the lessons in this unit. This unit included lessons that showcased the commonalities between the two nations, such as soaring bald eagles, regions with cold winters, fishing boats, deciduous forests and Niagara Falls. But the two regions also boast their own special attributes. Canadian Mounties, Arctic animals and the Northern Lights all make their home in Canada, while the United States has the Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty and Gee’s Bend Quilts. We compared and contrasted these two nation neighbors in the Canada & USA Unit of our Curriculum.
- We then journeyed to the diverse region of Asia in our art room, which happened to coincide with the Year of the Tiger, which we turned into a school wide celebration, as our mascot is the tiger. Three portrait lessons were created in this unit, each in a unique style of Kokeshi, manga and a self-portrait as an ancient Chinese warrior. Animals and objects that are rich in history and symbolism were also featured, including a playful panda, swimming koi fish, bright dragon, and a decorative mehndi hand. Form and texture are sprinkled in this unit in a 3D ger, full market boat and a bento lunch collage. We enjoyed our stops throughout Asia.
- We went on a European tour from the comfort of our art room with this unit full of traditions and rich history. This European trip was completed with stops at the Eiffel Tower, Colosseum, and the canals in Holland. We took time to explore the intricate traditions of decorated eggs, ceramic tiles, window boxes, Dala horses and nesting dolls together. Finally, we learned about the places that people call home with lessons featuring different styles of homes, from ski chalets to turf houses, all with our Europe Unit.
- We then adventured to Africa through art and explored the amazing sights and sounds this continent has to offer. Students encountered safari animals in this unit, including zebras, elephants, giraffes and chameleons. Patterned African homes, traditional crafts and unique landscape filled out the rest of our trip to Africa this year.
- Finally, as the year ends, we will be setting sail to Oceania with a unit that captures the diversity and special aspects of this wide region that consists of Australia, New Zealand, and the island groupings of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. Animals that make this region home are featured in colorful lessons, including kiwi, platypus, koala, sharks, Komodo dragons, kangaroos and sea turtles. Colorful quilts, woven canoe sails, a line design boomerang, wearable leis, coral reefs, Hawaiian dancers and layered landscapes are also lessons that students will experience with the Oceania Unit as end the school year.
