Students studied the art of Tim Burton, famous filmmaker and artist. Tim Burton's characters are often versions of himself. Take Edward Scissorhands, for instance, who is an artistic marvel, but whom the community feels is a danger and should be outcast. Burton's characters are exaggerated in some way, and reflect the awkwardness he felt as a child. For this project, students had to create their own alter-ego. They had to create a version of themselves that showed some skill or talent they would love to possess, while still being themselves. The project started with a drawing (a plan), followed by making a wire sculpture attached to a base, and then covered with plaster gauze. Finally, acrylic paint and other materials were added for detail. If you read the artist statements, you will get a better understanding of each student. Enjoy!
