Inspired by Edward Gorey's 'The Doubtful Guest,' students were asked to create their own character getting into mischief. We explored the concept of creating rough drafts and working on revisions to bring our ideas to life. Grades 1-8 drew their character multiple times to really flesh them out and practice their details and shading techniques. All grades practiced the pen and ink illustration technique, drawing their final draft lightly with pencil and tracing over it with a pen or marker and erasing the pencil lines. Grades 2-8 used hatching and crosshatching as a shading technique to add detail and volume to their illustrations. Grades 5-8 used specialty illustration pens called Micron Pens to complete their illustrations.
