Continuing our unit on color, I shared with the class the bright and colorful artwork of abstract expressionist, Alma Woodsey Thomas. Taking our inspiration from Alma's joyful colors, concentric circles and brick-like lines throughout her artwork, students were tasked to create a landscape painting with either a sun or moon as well as land or water to create a thoughtful landscape. Students first sketched out their designs using thumbnail sketches before drawing their chosen composition on their art paper. Next, they began their painting with an underpainting in watercolor to layout their color and get rid of the white background. Lastly, they completed their painting using acrylic paint to create the well-recognized brick-like lines that Alma used in her artwork. This resulted in each student creating a beautiful, colorful landscape painting all their own.
