About this School Project (1st Japanese Tea Bowls (Pinch Pots))

First graders expanded upon their culture of Asian art this year by learning about Japanese and Chinese tea bowls used in different ceremonies and the intricate designs based on nature on different ceramic pieces we viewed. Students reviewed where clay comes from and the process of clay. We then used our fingers to form and pinch a small tea bowl out of clay to turn our clay into a 3D sculpture. After firing, we added our own nature design in blue on our white clay, and added clear glaze to make them shine after our last firing.
