Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I hope that you and your family had a wonderful summer! My name is Ms. Castellano, and this is my third year teaching art at I.S. 218. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.
Prior to my arrival, I taught PreK through 12th grade art in New York City and Westchester County. In addition, I have taught art enrichment classes at Young at Art Workshop for children ages 3 through 10. Furthermore, I have taught various educational programs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Neuberger Museum and the Bruce Museum assisting in museum classes for children of all ages. Finally, I have been m an adjunct professor at Mercy College’s Graduate School of Education and Manhattanville College School of Education. Currently I am also a private art tutor.
In addition, to being an art educator, I am also an emerging artist. I have been a part of group and solo exhibitions both locally and internationally. I have artwork in both private and public collections.
I have many wonderful art experiences planned for your children this year. I teach a variety of lessons including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. My art lessons are based on the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, The New York City Art Standards, and they address art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. This year, I plan to with the classroom teachers to implement art lessons that coincide with the students’ curriculum and incorporate literacy.
It is my educational philosophy that everyone can be an artist. Art is not about how well someone draws or paints. Instead, art is about learning how to use a variety of tools and techniques to express thoughts and feelings. My assessments are based on effort, participation in class, following the guidelines of projects, and studio behavior.
I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth A. Castellano,
Art Teacher
