I began my art teaching career in 1995, working in a middle school in North Carolina. The following school year, I accepted my current teaching position at Brunswick Acres Elementary School in South Brunswick, New Jersey. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working in a progressive district that values and understands the importance of art education in children's lives. My administration, P.T.O., faculty, and families support me when I propose new projects for my artists. Because of this validation, I am able to deliver a quality program, introducing my artists to a variety of mediums. We dive into a realm of self expression and creative problem solving following a discipline-based art education format (studio, history, aesthetic, criticism).
I hope that I inspire my students as much as they inspire me. They are always taking risks and really putting their hearts into their work. There is a spectacular energy that is always apparent in the art room. I am reminded every day as to why I wanted to be an art teacher in the first place, as I see my student's faces light up with each new creative adventure. Art is one subject where there are thousands of solutions to one problem. In my classes, individuality is celebrated, and self-expression is valued. I always tell my students that my job is to guide them and offer them as many experiences as I can to help them to become independent artists. They in turn are asked to try their best to express themselves through their art, and to always listen to that little creative voice inside their hearts and minds.
Thank you to Artsonia for providing a forum for children to actively participate in celebrating creativity. My students have not only gained a heightened awareness of their own talents, but have also learned to appreciate the ideas of other students in our school and all over the world.
