Tina Atkinson
My name is Tina M. Atkinson and I have been teaching art at Percy Priest since 1998. I love inspiring young people to think and learn about the world around them through the visual arts. Our program at Percy Priest incorporates art history, personal experience, prior knowledge and enduring themes to allow students to probe deeply into concepts and ideas that shape their lives and empower them to, in turn, reshape the world. Throughout my work with students I have also reached into areas of art education th ... read moreat reach an audience beyond my own classroom. I educate my school community by publishing Art News Notes that inform parents on the artists and concepts their children are studying as well as post the information with displays throughout the building to inform all viewers about the thought and process involved to create the artwork. I have written teacher packets for local museums and was selected The Parthenon Museum's First Teacher of the Year in 2005. After attending the Nashville Institute for Visual Arts Education and being trained in writing unit plans using enduring themes, I wrote a unit on Place for the 4th grade class which led to a student-designed outdoor classroom that was built on our campus in 2008. It is an amazing outdoor learning space that is used by our school community in a variety of ways, making the students who designed very proud! In 2009, I was named Tennessee Art Education Association?s (TAEA) Middle Region Art Teacher of the Year, 2012 TAEA Elementary Art Teacher of the Year, 2018 TAEA State Art Educator of the Year, and honored by my district as a Blue Ribbon Teacher for instruction, Class of 2019.
I also believe that sharing what we know with our colleagues is extremely important. I have been chosen to present at the National Art Education Association's (NAEA) annual conference many times as well as at the State and District level. I have served on a variety of District committees which were tasked with text book adoption, standards writing, curriculum development, curriculum training, in-service training, mentoring, as well as assessment development and implementation. I have also served on the TAEA board as the Elementary Representative for the state of Tennessee. The art room has hosted a variety of practicum students and student teachers from several Middle Tennessee Universities. The art room, just like art itself, is fun, offers the opportunity to communicate thoughts, feelings and ideas, and records the history of those who pass through it, leaving their mark on the world.
