I began teaching elementary art in the Logan Elm School District in Pickaway County in 1978. The past 30 years I have taught junior high art at McDowell Exchange School. I received my BA from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio and a Masters in Education from the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati. I am a member of the Central Ohio Art Education Association (COAEA), the Ohio Art Educations Association. I have enjoyed taking art workshops offered by Aamaco Ceramics, and Mayco Ceramics and classes ... read more or workshops at the Pittsburg Art Institute, The Savannah College of Art and Design, The University of Indianapolis, Ohio University, Urbana University, the Dephi Creative Glass Center in Michigan, Bead Fest in Philadelphia and Artsonia in Chicago. I am a member of the school district's classroom teachers association. I was honored to be chosen as an Ohio Art Education Association Central Region Outstanding Art Teacher in 2001, included in the seventh edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2002, and in November 2007 received the OAEA Middle School Division Award. In March of 2008 I received the Western Middle School Division award from the National Art Education Association. My student's art work has been published in the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) newsletter, on the OAEA website, in Arts and Activities magazine and the Ohio School's Magazine. Student's work has also been recognized at local and state art shows and exhibitions including: local businesses, The Circleville Pumpkin Show, the Pickaway County Mental Health Center, the state Youth Art Month Exhibition, the state Young People's Art Exhibition, the Ohio Art Education Association Central Regional exhibit, and the Ohio State Fair. The arts are deeply rooted within the Logan Elm School District. Students begin their exploration with an art teacher as early as kindergarten; their skills and arts education is built on each year during their school career. Art students at McDowell participate in learning activities that focus on production, aesthetics, art criticism, and art history. Students study the elements of art and principles of design through creative art experiences and the use of a variety of media, along with studying artists and art history. May 2023 will mark the 55th. year McDowell students have had art work on display as a part of an arts celebration. My philosophy on Art Education is CREATE..... C - communicate R - respond to art (past and present) E - express themselves A - appreciate T - technical skills (growth in) E - experiment
I retired at the end of the school year in 2023 after 45 years teaching in the Logan Elm School District. The 2023-2024 school year began a new era in the district with a large facility that houses the high school, middle school and the elementary school. Artwork for the Logan Elm Middle School and Logan Ele Elementary Schools will be found on their own separate Artsonia portfolio pages. I wish Jody Tate, Heath Bennett and Rob Griffith much happiness and success working with the art students of Logan Elm.
