Carrie Schmidt
Hello,
My name is Carrie; I am the Middle and High School art teacher at Deerfield. I am originally from Belmont, WI, and graduated from UW-La Crosse and completed my Masters in Art Education from AOEU. I began my teaching career in Illinois where I taught art for four years. I am excited to be continuing my career at Deerfield! I have a love for teaching and the arts and enjoy having an occupation where my two passions combine. I strive to inspire students with new ideas and experiences. I love ... read moreseeing original works of art and enjoy traveling the world to see them in person. My most exciting adventure is being a mom of three! My husband and I love spending time with our kids, family, and friends. When time allows I enjoy outdoor activities, cooking, making art, sewing, and learning new things, like raising goats!
Being an art teacher, I’m given a unique opportunity to get to know students in a deeper way, as they create and discuss their work. I strive to offer support and encouragement throughout the creative process. I desire to help students develop their character by teaching them life skills using a modified choice based art curriculum where artistic behaviors grow. My hope for students is that they feel connected, supported and are able to become passionate and excited for their own learning and the creative process. I want students to experience success and see growth because of their commitment to working hard, trying new things, overcoming obstacles, and giving their best effort; and that these skills carry over into all aspects of their life.
My desire to move to a modified choice based art curriculum that focuses on Project Based Learning (PBL) stemmed from more and more of my lessons (which I thought would be highly interesting and engaging for students) failing to engage and excite the diverse learners in my classes. As I worked on completing my Masters's degree I made changes to my courses to allow for more student-directed learning; providing my students with more choice through the use of setting up centers or studios, giving PBL challenges, and focusing on themes. After completing research and seeing the many benefits of PBL I've made it a goal to incorporate real-world experiences that bring students and the arts out of the classroom and into the community. I strive to provide more opportunities for my students to be in charge of their own learning process, generating their own unique ideas, critically thinking and solving problems and communicating and collaborating throughout the process. The very skills needed to be a successful member of society are the skills being taught in the art room: flexibility, adaptability, initiative, self-direction, productivity, accountability leadership, and responsibility. I know students will be developing these skills through their art classes.
