I believe in the importance of creating an environment where students feel inspired to explore new topics and dive deeper into their interests as well as collaborate to share their findings and ideas. I often quote Henri Matisse when I tell my students, “Creativity takes courage.” I believe this to be true as it takes courage for students to be okay with the unknown and ambiguity that comes with embarking on a journey to find themselves as creative thinkers. If teachers are to enrich the minds of students, then it is important for them to know how their brains work. I make it a part of my role as an art educator to build on my understandings of neuroscience and how it relates to students of various backgrounds.
I want my students to know that the practice of being a creative thinker can be a way of life and not just something that happens in the art room. Metacognition is important in being a mindful and innovative creative thinker. It is important for students to practice methods that will create the most beneficial neural pathways in their brains and then continue these practices in order for these pathways to become strong (myelination). I feel fulfilled when my students are able to confidently take on challenges with positivity and excitement while knowing they are confronting unknowns to find their own novel solutions.
