I believe that everyone is an Artist because they can create something in a unique way that only they can. Art is a reflection of the creator. Students often say they want to be an artist someday. I tell them they already are and that my job is to help them get better and better at it and to help them find something about art they can use for the rest of their life. I challenge my students to constantly self-assess and improve upon their skills so they can be the best at what they are trying to accomplish ... read more, while also celebrating their strengths. I try to help them see how art is everywhere around them, a part of everything seen and used everyday in some way. They are always amazed at how many things are truly touched by the artistic process in one way or another. I try to help my students make personal connections to what they see, make, believe, and understand throughout the creative process. I also incorporate life long skills like planning, time management, perseverance, critiquing, problem solving, collaboration, and critical thinking. Through these concepts, Art is made and shared and hopefully will remain a part of every student's life in some incredible, creative way.
I am a National Board Certified Teacher (www.nbct.org), have a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education from Baldwin-Wallace College and have taught Art in Brooklyn since 1997. I am also a 2014 recipient of the Outstanding Art Teacher Award for the North East Ohio Region of the Ohio Art Education Association. I exhibit student art in the Ohio Art Education Association Youth Art Month exhibits, Young People's Art exhibits, Regional Youth Art Month exhibits, and the OAEA Youth Art Month Flag and Graphic design competitions. Numerous students have been award winners in these exhibits over the years. Student work has also been on exhibit at the BayArts spring student art shows.
