Katherine Nixon
Dear Parents, I’m so glad your child/children are in art this year! Having them in my class is a true blessing and I know we will all learn a lot together. My name is Katherine Nixon, though you may hear some refer to me as “K.D.” I chose not to utilize this name within the work setting to avoid confusion amongst myself and Coach T. This is my third year teaching Art at LCS and I’ve loved every minute of it! I taught art and yearbook 2018-2019, and again 2019-2020 then took a break during the 20-21 academi ... read morec year and was fortunate to return this year!
My husband Adam and I have been married just over 6 years now. I graduated from Lubbock Christian University in May of 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education. Following receipt of my degree we gave birth to our 4 year old son, Braylon, and I instructed both Pre-K & the Monkeys/ 1.5 year old classes at Just kids and Bright Horizon’s Preschool ministries, This is also what I chose to do last year with my 14month old daughter Madilyn. I am no stranger to the classroom setting due to being raised in a family of teachers. I led and instructed Green Lawn Church of Christ’s LTC Art for several years both as a High school and college student. I also worked at Bayless Elementary as a Kindergarten and Office aid, and assistant Art teacher all 4 years of college (2013-2017). Neither of those things were requirements to graduate but of my own personal choosing to help better my knowledge and prepare for my practicum. My student teaching and observations took place at Rush Elementary, Bowie Elementary, Mackenzie Middle School, Atkins Middle School, Coronado High School, and Frenship Highschool.
As of August 2021 I obtained a Master of Arts in Curriculum, Education, and Instruction from York college. My family and I are members at Sunrise Church of Christ and we are currently housing one of LC’s foreign exchange students from China (Kevin). I love to support the students/ your children in any way possible, and while I am no longer the yearbook adviser you will likely see my family around at many of our schools events. Please don’t ever hesitate to say hello or approach me with questions about what’s going on within my classroom.
Elementary Art is all about learning the Basics of Art through explorative measures. Your child/children will learn all about various artists, artistic styles, terms, and follow the state TEKS as well as National Art Standards. 3rd-6th Graders keep a log of their work and new terms/concepts within a sketchbook while PK3-2nd grade work on grasping the early foundations of art and forming portfollios.
Both High School and Junior High Art I focus on the basics of Art. Throughout this year I will teach your children Art History, various mediums of art, and career paths. Typically we begin with 2D works and then transition into 3D. A few of the mediums we work with include but are not limited to: drawing pencils, charcoal, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic paint, color pencils, india ink, clay (air dry/ Jr. High & Kiln fire/ High school), and much more.
Blessings, Mrs. Nixon LCS Art Teacher
