Leslie Roberts
Who is Mrs. Roberts? I am a lover of art. An art teacher by day and an artist by night; mostly a watercolor painter. I find inspiration in the subtleties of our world. I am most inspired by water, sunrises and sunsets, sailboats, reflections, and nature. My work is an intuitive interpretation of the world around me. I have developed a library of colors and landscapes in my brain that I allow to flow freely onto my work surface.
Where have you taught? I am in my 7th year of teaching and love every minut ... read moree of it! I spent my first five years teaching inner city in Grand Rapids Public Schools, as a high school art teacher and the past two years in a rural community at Allendale Public Schools, as a middle school art teacher.
What is your why? I teach because I am passionate about art, the way it connects individuals, its ability to heal, and I want to share this with my students. For me, its not about the end result on the paper. Its about the progress and the growth I see in students from the first day to their last day with me. I absolutely love when students have their "AH HA!" moment, that moment when everything I have been teaching them makes sense. I live for these moments. Even if all of my students do not go into an art profession, I want them to take these skills and come back to them when they need to get away from the stresses of life.
Why do you make art? I create for myself. To allow myself to be free in the moment and create a piece that comes from my heart and soul. The more I create, the more I am able to connect with myself, others, and the world around me.
What else do you want your students to know about you? I love nature, which means I hike, run, paddle board, anything that involves being outdoors and probably close to the water. I have a dog, Finnigan, we call him Finn for short, and a cat, Lenny. I love to travel and have been to 48 of the 50 states and to Italy.
How would your former students describe you? Too nice. Strict but flexible. Understanding. Organized. Caring. School mom, auntie, big sis. A little crazy but fun.
