Meet Therese Lunsford
from Mt. Pleasant Senior High School
Mt. Pleasant, Michigan
Biography
I received my BA in Art Education in the spring of 2006 and my Master's in Education Technology in the summer of 2010. I've taught for Mt. Pleasant Public schools since the fall of 2006.
My specialties as an artist include handcrafted jewerly, painting and drawing with a focus on portraiture.
My overall goal for the art classroom is to start students with the basics or fundamentals of art, including color theory and the Elements and Principles of design. Once students master the beginning components, they have the foundation necessary to build on to create personal and unique works of art. Students start with Introductory Art, which allows students to explore many media and concepts in art, and incorporates as much 3-D work as 2-D. In addition to the intellectual side of the art curriculum, our aim in the art department is to provide meaning in making art. Students should reflect on their own art through writing and other forms of expression to understand the reasons they produce the personal and unique works of art that they do. As students go on in the art program, they can choose to specialize in an area of art by enrolling in Studio Art.
I find Mt. Pleasant to be a wonderful community that is highly appreciative and supportive of the arts. The students are involved in many community projects. Art Reach alone provides community art service projects like Chair Affair, banners, and Day with the Arts. Additionally, involvement in art and craft shows is important to the art program at Mt. Pleasant High School. Programs like NAHS and Art Club offer after school opportunities for involvement and service in an art capacity.
Artsonia is one more way for student art work to get "published" for the world to see! Additionally, the art work here can be used to create unique items and gifts that act as a fundraiser for our classroom. Thanks for looking and for your support!
Don't forget to become a fan club member for all you favorite artists here at MPHS!
