Meet Donna Staten
from Gattis Elementary School

Biography
Donna Staten is entering her eighth year in RRISD & Gattis Elementary and taught previously for 22 years in Temple ISD. Donna is currently serving on the Teacher Advisory Council of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as well as on the steering committee of their new initiative Teacher2Teacher. She was recently awarded a "20 to Watch" in education award by the National School Board Assn. at the Consortium of School Networking conference in Atlanta- the only art teacher to ever receive the award.
Ms. Staten has been a speaker/presenter at numerous conferences including National Art Ed Assn, Texas Art Ed Assn, and Texas Assn of School Boards, and Elevating & Celebrating Effective Teaching & Teachers for the Gates Foundation. She also presented two sessions at the online STEAM Connectivity 2015 conference as well as the Art of Education 2013 online conference. She speaks about using social media in the classroom and PLN building. She has been interviewed by USA Today, NBC TV and numerous educational blogs about how she uses Pinterest in education.
Donna has been listed in Who's Who in Education, Who's Who in America, and other editions for her work in art education. She has curated a number of international art exhibitions and is published in SchoolArts Magazine and Arts & Activities Magazine; was recognized many times by Crayola's Art-in-Education program and was the first Camp Crayola director for Binney & Smith, and was named a Teacher of Distinction by CelebratingArt.com.
Her students have been recognized at state, national, and international levels numerous times. She has had 92 winners in the prestigious International Children's Art Exhibition, judged in Japan, including 11 Gold medals and 2 Supreme Gold medals. Fifteen students were named national winners by the Crayola Dream-Makers Art-in-Education Program, and 17 students were named to the Save the Children Permanent Artist Collection. Numerous student artworks have been published in books, magazines, journals, calendars and other publications.
Ms. Staten has been actively involved with artsonia since it began in 2000. She has had the number 1 ranked school in Texas 13 times and in the nation 3 times. She has spoken about the site to numerous groups including the Elementary Division of the TAEA at the state conference the past 2 years and at TAEA mini-conferences in 2010 and 2012. She has served as a mentor to train other art teachers.
