In this project Preschool students used various media and techniques to create a landscape. Our starting off point for inspiration was Vincent Van Gogh's painting, "The Starry Night" which we then broke down into main elements of a landscape: background and foreground. This project is highlighting the Studio Habit of Mind, "Observe", as artists continually observe the world around them to incorporate into their artwork. Many students chose to make houses resembling their actual homes including family members and much more. Some students, in true Preschool fashion, chose to let their imaginations take the lead by adding details like ladders for Santa on the roof, tornados, and gigantic birds flying in the sky. The background was created using a technique called "oil pastel resist" where we drew details with pastels and then used watercolor paint to fill in the sky. Next we painted part of the foreground which was the ground where we later "built" our houses out of paper. Lastly, we added details with black markers and oil pastels.
