Kindergarten students focused on the Central Idea that “An artist’s use of materials and tools can impact and reflect the natural world, their community, and other living things.” This connects to our IB PYP Transdisciplinary theme of “Sharing the Planet.” Students identified how they feel when other students share art materials and help them get the tools they need. Each table group made sure everyone could reach the pencils, erasers, and papers as they were drawing! Artists often use reference images to help improve drawing skills, so kindergarten artists picked one for their animal artwork! After looking carefully for the lines and shapes they needed, they chose colors that expressed their own ideas and creativity! Kindergarten students listened to Eric Carle’s book “The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse” inspired by artist Franz Marc. Students shared their personal responses to the different animals in the book, such as a polka dotted donkey, and remained open-minded as they heard various opinions! As they were drawing, painting, reflecting, and listening, students were working toward the following Ohio Visual Art Standards: K.1CR Explore environments and experiences to generate original artmaking ideas. K.3RE Observe and describe works of art. K.3CO Share personal responses to works of art and acknowledge the opinions of others.
