About this School Project (1- Self-Portrait)
We began this unit by looking at many different Self-Portraits exemplars and discussing how portraits have changed throughout history. Next we looked at the work of contemporary artist, Kehinde Wiley, including his Presidential Portrait of Barack Obama.
Then students designed and created their own self-portrait in a similar style. First, we painted a background using patterning and references to nature. Then students chose a skin color paper to create their face. Patterned paper and yarn was used to finish out the shirt and hair. Students were encouraged to express their individuality and celebrate what makes us different and unique.
