About this School Project (Cityscape)
First grade students learned about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Students enjoyed Basquiat’s paintings, which he creates in a very sketchy, child-like style. Many of these paintings are images of buildings, cars, and airplanes – subjects that Basquiat was accustomed to because he lived in New York City for much of his life. Basquiat was also intrigued by all of the text and graphic images that he was surrounded by as he walked through the city. These ideas made their way into his art in the form of initials, copyright symbols, and crowns.
First graders drew inspiration from Basquiat and created their own cityscapes through the use of many different painting techniques, oil pastels, and collage.
