About this School Project (A Ray of Light, A Ray of Hope )
All we need is a little bit of light and it will drive out a lot of darkness. The students and I discussed the literal idea of darkness as the absence of light and that even a little light ends the darkness. We went on and touched on the idea that mitzvot can make our world a better place and that small acts of kindness, respect, and being a mensch can brighten tough days that might feel dark. Lighting our Chanukah and Shabbat candles can do just that. As we designed our own unique Chanukiah, which had to have nine candles including a shamash that is taller, we added the glow and warmth of the candles in the dark room. This fun and special art lesson included drawing in perspective, cutting paper, designing a tablecloth and Chanukiah, using oil pastels, connecting to the importance of oil during Chanukah, using glue, scissors, and other materials, plus imagination and dedication.
Great work 2nd and 3rd graders! What a beautiful keepsake to remind you of the importance of doing mitzvot.
