About this School Project (2nd Grade Cityscape Collage)
Second graders studied the work of Romare Bearden, a 1940’s Harlem artist. Students looked at Bearden’s artwork “The Block,” which is an abstract collage of his neighborhood in Harlem. Students examined the details of the architecture in the piece and noticed how Bearden used colors and shapes to show the people, cars, and buildings. They learned that a collage is made from different papers that you put together with glue or tape.
Each student designed their own city on graph paper to serve as a blueprint. They designed 4 or more buildings of different sizes, each with unique details (roofline, doors, windows, stairs etc.), and at least 1 overlapping building in their cityscape plan. Then they created a collage based on their plan with 4 or more different colors of paper. Details for each building were cut out and glued on, and also hand-drawn details were added to the buildings and sky to complete the artwork.
