About this School Project (2nd Grade Painted Skies Inspired by Artists Around the World)
2nd grade artists looked at several artworks that included skies from artists around the world including paintings by by Polish artist Agnieszka Kozien, Chinese artist Guo Xi, Afro-Native American artist Richard Mayhew, Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral, and Australian artist Albert Namatjira. They observed the similarities and differences in color choices the artists made and how they chose to fill the space on their artworks. Students discovered that throughout history and in varying locations, artists often depicted the natural world around them! Sometimes the art gave clues to "where we are in place and time" and other times the viewer could just tell the artist was depicting the sky and other parts of nature.
Students then demonstrated art skills with watercolor and tempera cake paints creating their own skies. After the paintings were dry, students used sharpie markers to add small silouettes to their artwork. They first practiced drawing the details on dry erase boards so they could really think about which elements of art they would need to use if they wanted to make a specific objects, animal, or people. Students were given the opportunity to create a 3rd painting where they chose if they wanted to include sharpied silouettes, try one of the artist's styles, or create their own style of sky painting!
Students were working toward the following Ohio Visual Art Benchmarks:
2.1CR Generate art-making ideas from multiple sources.
2.3CR Investigate ways to org
