About this School Project (2nd grade Sunflower Still Life)
After exploring the life and work of Vincent VanGogh, students learned that a “still life” is a work of art depicting a mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects, which are either natural or man-made. During class, each table was given a vase of sunflowers, and students were asked to choose 1 flower to carefully observe. They spent time noticing the shape, color, and texture of each part: center, petals, and stem.
Next, students created a pencil sketch to delineate each part of the flower. They were asked to zoom in on the flower in their drawing and make their picture fill the page. Last, students added color to their work with oil pastels. Second graders focused on noticing the color of each part and choosing oil pastels to match, or blending 2 colors to get a more accurate color. They chose 1 color for the background to contrast the flower and showed their best craftsmanship to fill in the background completely with color. We are so proud of the effort that was shown and how students rose to the challenge of the sunflower observational drawing.
