About this School Project (1Be Crazy Hair Self Portraits!)
First grade students had a very busy first class on their Crazy Hair Self Portraits! They viewed a slide show featuring self portraits created by artists all over the World. It is important that all children can imagine themselves as creators, so the self portraits feature artists who look like the our population of wonderful students at Foster School. They discussed what they noticed. They then had a guided "how to create a chin like the letter "U" then they discovered how their necks and shoulders moved down in curves. Sometimes heads are tilted; sometimes one shoulder is above the other. While they are drawing, I am passing out mirrors, and encouraging them to look at their eyes, and we talk about how each of them is different and special, and their eyes will look different than their neighbors. Last, we "air drew" different qualities of line. Curvy lines; zigzag lines, dotted lines, and the like. They received a "menu" of lines, and were encouraged to combine 5 different types of line to create crazy hair. Next class they will finish these, adding color in a special way. They had a GREAT time! They loved experimenting with different types of line, learning about self portraits, and working on a self portrait.
I also wanted to share about "Mistakes"; in our art room, "mistakes" are opportunities to come up with a creative solution: "I WONDER what I'll DO with that?"
