About this School Project (1st Grade - Monet's Garden Scratch Art)
First graders are continuing the unit on how Art is Everywhere in nature, by studying the famous artist Claude Monet and his beautiful gardens and pond in Giverny, France. We learned that Monet would paint outside in his garden at different times of the day to capture how the different light changes how things look. One of his favorite subjects to paint were the waterlilies, as well as the graceful, beautiful Japanese bridge that straddled his pond. Students used a variety of straight, curved, and gestural lines to scratch through the black scratch paper to reveal the colors underneath.
