About this School Project (3rd Grade Mandala Drawings)
Students in 3rd grade created mandalas. Students explored mandalas from a variety of different cultures:
"Mandalas were created in the service of one of the world's great religions, Buddhism. They were produced in Tibet, India, Nepal, China, Japan, Bhutan, and Indonesia and date from the 4th century to the present. Now they are created throughout the world, including New York City."
Students watched a video presentation of the creation and destruction of a traditional Buddhist mandala and discussed their symbolism and meaning. Along with a traditional religious association, mandalas are also regarded generally as an artistic circular, symmetrical design. Students watched a demonstration and used a printed template to create a design with radial symmetry, with 4 or more shapes in each slice of their mandala. Students were also encouraged to use symmetry in their choice of color. Students could choose to create an abstract mandala or include a theme in their work.
