About this School Project (Marshmallow Polar Bear)
We discussed prior knowledge of Polar Bears. I read the book "Baby Polar Bears" by Mary Elizabeth Salzmann to them, pointing out distinct characteristics and shapes of the Polar Bears. We drew a Polar Bear on blue paper out of simple shapes: circle, semi- circle (ears) and a part of a triangle for the body. We discussed the texture of the Polar Bear’s body and that as artists we needed to make our Polar Bear "feel" soft to our viewers. Students were shown how toprint white paint onto the paper with a marshmallow, we followed the circle we made and filled it in, going back to get paint from a previous spot on the bear. Next, we printed the ears and then finally the body.

When this was dry, we used a marshmallow again to print the eyes, nose and inside of the ears black. We used the end of a popsicle stick to print on black eyebrows and a mouth. Students then learned how to mix gray and looking back at the book noticed the chest of the bear is gray to make the head show up, it has a shadow. Students then made gray and using the same marshmallow, added a shadow on the chest, under the chin.
We added a background for our polar bear by creating snowflakes by printing white on with our pointer finger.
