About this School Project (2nd Grade Building Collage)
Second graders studied the work of Romare Bearden, a 1940’s Harlem artist, whose work was recently on exhibit at The High Museum. Students looked at Bearden’s artwork “The Block,” which is an abstract collage of his neighborhood in Harlem. Students examined the details of the architecture in the piece and noticed how Bearden used colors and shapes to show the people, cars, and buildings. They learned that a collage is made from different papers that you put together with glue or tape.
Each student designed a front elevation view of a building (real or imaginary) on graph paper to serve as a blueprint. Then they chose different papers for each part of the building and glued them together to create a collage of their design.
