About this School Project (2nd Grade Monet's Japanese Bridge)
The second grade art classes learned about the artist Claude Monet. Monet was the first artist to paint in the Impressionist style, which was an art movement that focused on creating art that captured the light and the "feeling of the moment."
Monet's favorite things to paint were at his own home in Giverny, France. He built a beautiful flower garden and a picturesque pond with a Japanese-style footbridge and water lilies. Monet was obsessed with light; his paintings of water contain hundreds of colors. He created a series of 250 water lily paintings at all different times of day during different seasons. Sometimes he would paint the same scene or object over and over again, but at different times of day or over the year.
To create these beautiful pieces of art, the second graders used several different painting techniques. First, they used a wash technique: they got their papers wet and painted bands of color with blue, purple and turquoise watercolors. Before it was dry, they sprinkled their paintings with salt. Salt absorbs some of the color from the paints, resulting in a snowflake-like effect.
Next, they dabbed and swirled green, turquoise and white tempera paint to create the trees and water lilies. Finally, the used oil pastels to add their final details, like the bridge and flowers.
