About this School Project (Watercolor Wash Silhouettes)
Third Grade Artists created watercolor wash silhouettes. A watercolor wash is a bit different from a watercolor painting. First the paintbrush wets the paper with clean water. Paint is added, creating very soft color transitions. Science meets art when a bit of salt is sprinkled on the wettest parts of the paper. The paint colors get sucked up into the salt, leaving a halo effect.
After studying the work of Kara Walker, a prominent artist, who uses silhouettes to tell the story of slavery and oppression, students cut paper to tell their story.
