About this School Project (THE AMAZING BANYAN TREE)
There is an amazing tree the originates in India. The branches of this massive tree are constantly sending out roots from the top that anchor into the soil creating additional trunks. Some trees are 1500 feet in diameter. The banyan is sacred to the Hindus. They call it a banyan which means "trader," because markets are held under its vast sheltering framework. If you happen to visit Legoland in Orlando Florida, there is a Banyan tree that as been growing since 1939. Legoland is on the site which was originally Cypress Gardens. I spoke with the staff at Legoland and they told me that caring for the tree is a high priority. When the weather gets cooler they bring in portable heaters to protect the tree. In this project students designed a Banyan tree with tempera paint and oil pastels.
