About this School Project (5th - Tunnel Books)
In this interdisciplinary art project, students in 5th grade combined English and Art to create a three dimensional tunnel book. This tunnel book visually displays a scene of a favorite chapter book that the students have read within the last year.
Perspective, depth and space were key components in this project. During the ideation process, students planned out a background, two middle grounds, and a foreground (four frames total) that would work together to display the scene in correct perspective. This means that objects, figures, and other drawings would get bigger the closer they are to the foreground, giving the illusion of spatial accuracy.
To create the drawings for their tunnel book, students also needed to blend at least two colors together to make their drawings look more realistic. Students studied visual references to make their drawings accurate.
Planning for overlapping objects and space was a vital part of successfully creating a tunnel book. Students continuously needed to stack their four frames together to make sure each area would show through to the foreground. The final artwork shows many classes of hard work to develop—in correct perspective—a scene from a favorite book. Great job, 5th grade!
