About this School Project (1 - Pysanky Eggs)
INTRO:
In order to get in the mood to create their eggs, students were introduced to this project through the book “Rechenka's Eggs” by Patricia Polacco. This book tells the story of Babushka, Rechenka (a goose she rescued) and their Pysanky eggs.
Students were also led in a discussion of what it means when a family or person celebrates their culture; they have unique traditions important to their family which could be in the form of festivals, dance, song as well as food, to name a few. I discussed some of the food my family makes and eats based on my families culture and students shared the unique foods or traditions they celebrate.
PROJECT:
Students then created their own Pysanky Eggs. Using the wax resist technique that is still used on the finest Pysanky Eggs, students drew designs with crayons using lines, shapes and Pysanky symbols. They then painted in their designs with tempera paint and then framed their work for display.
