About this School Project (Metal Trees)
In the book The Tin Forest there is an old man that lives in the middle of a vast expanse of garbage. He dreams of a beautiful forest, and one day he gets the idea to turn everyone else’s trash into trees, flowers, and birds. Soon real wild life and plants take over the Tin Forest and the old man ends up living his dreams.
Second graders pulled inspiration from this book and the art of Haitian metal workers. Haitian artists create beautiful scenes of daily life and nature cut from recycled oil drums. Students talked about artists that strive to use recycled materials. They used this idea to create their own trees using cardboard, foil, and other metal pieces.
